Antifreeze and coolant disposal

Used antifreeze and engine coolant collected from garages, fleet workshops, plant yards, farms and factories across all of Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire.

Antifreeze and coolant collected

Every cooling system drain-down, radiator swap, water pump job or head gasket repair leaves used coolant behind. Most antifreeze is based on ethylene glycol, which is toxic to people and animals and harmful to rivers and drains, so used antifreeze can’t go down a drain or into general waste. It has to be collected by a licensed carrier.

BL Oils is a Doncaster-based, Environment Agency upper-tier waste carrier and dealer (CBDU69834). We collect used antifreeze and coolant across all of Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, usually on the same visit as your waste oil collection.

What we collect

  • Used engine coolant and antifreeze from cars, vans, HGVs, buses and tractors
  • Coolant from plant and machinery, generators and compressors
  • Old or unwanted antifreeze in drums or containers
  • Coolant mixed with oil, for example after a head gasket failure. We collect that too, just tell us when you book

Who we collect from: garages, dealerships, fleet and bus workshops, plant hire yards, farms, forklift firms and factories.

We don’t collect cooking oil. For used cooking oil from kitchens and takeaways, please use a specialist cooking oil collector.

  1. Tell us what you’ve got

Roughly how much coolant, what it’s stored in, whether it’s mixed with anything, and your postcode.

  2. Free quote & booking

We give you a free, no-obligation quote and add it to your oil collection or book a separate visit.

  3. Collected with paperwork

We collect the coolant and leave you a hazardous waste consignment note.

Keep coolant separate

The most useful thing you can do is keep antifreeze out of your waste oil tank. Mixing coolant with oil turns two easy wastes into one harder one. Keep a separate, clearly labelled drum or container for coolant, with a lid, standing on a drip tray or in a bunded area away from drains.

  • Use a separate, sealed and labelled container for coolant
  • Don’t mix it with oil, fuel, brake fluid, screenwash or solvents
  • Keep it away from drains and out of reach of animals
  • Mop up spills with absorbent and keep used absorbent for collection

Frequently asked questions

Is used antifreeze hazardous waste?

Usually, yes. Antifreeze containing hazardous substances, such as ethylene glycol, is classed as hazardous waste, so it needs a licensed carrier and a consignment note.

Can you collect antifreeze with my waste oil?

Yes. We can collect coolant on the same visit as your waste oil, filters and oily rags. Just keep the coolant in its own container.

Can I pour old coolant down the drain?

No. Antifreeze is toxic and can pollute drains and watercourses. Keep it in a sealed container and have it collected.

Do you collect coolant mixed with oil?

Yes. We collect coolant that has got mixed with oil. Just tell us when you book so the paperwork describes it correctly.

How much does antifreeze disposal cost?

Every job is different, so we give you a free, no-obligation quote. Tell us how much you have, how it’s stored and your postcode.
