Wind turbine oil disposal and collection

Used gearbox and hydraulic oil from wind turbine oil changes collected across all of Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire and the Humber ports, working alongside a specialist partner.

Oil from wind farms, collected legally

Wind turbines rely on oil. Gearboxes, hydraulic pitch and brake systems and other components are filled with lubricating and hydraulic oils that need changing during routine maintenance. Every wind turbine oil change leaves used oil that has to be collected and disposed of legally.

BL Oils is a Doncaster-based, Environment Agency upper-tier waste carrier and dealer (CBDU69834). We collect waste oil across all of Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, and for the wind sector we work alongside a specialist partner company. Between us, used oil from turbine maintenance is collected with the correct paperwork and sent to a permitted facility.

Working with a specialist partner. Wind turbine maintenance has its own way of working, from site access to the volumes involved. Our partner specialises in this sector, and BL Oils provides the licensed collection and paperwork. Tell us about your site or project and we’ll agree the right approach with you.

Oils we collect from wind turbines

  • Gearbox oil from turbine gearbox oil changes
  • Hydraulic oil from pitch, yaw and brake systems
  • Other lubricating and transmission oils from turbine components
  • Used oil filters from servicing (oil filter disposal)

We collect from drums, IBCs and bulk containers. See waste oil collection for the full list.

We don’t collect cooking oil. For used cooking oil from kitchens and takeaways, please use a specialist cooking oil collector.

  1. Tell us about the job

Site location, turbine type if known, the oils involved, rough volumes, timing and access, plus your postcode or port.

  2. Agree the plan

We check the details, involve our specialist partner where needed, and give you a free, no-obligation quote.

  3. Collected with paperwork

The used oil is collected with the correct paperwork and taken to a permitted facility.

Onshore wind farms

For onshore sites, we collect from the wind farm itself, a nearby compound or your maintenance base, wherever the used oil is stored. Tell us about tanker access, site rules and any induction needed, and we’ll plan around your maintenance programme.

Offshore wind and the Humber ports

Used oil from offshore maintenance comes ashore by vessel. We collect marine waste oil at the ports of Hull, Goole, Immingham and Killingholme, so oil landed at those ports can be collected on the quayside with the right paperwork. See also Hull and Grimsby.

Planning around oil changes

Turbine oil changes can produce larger volumes in a short period, especially when several turbines are serviced in one campaign. Let us know your schedule and roughly how much oil to expect, and we’ll plan collections to suit.

Good storage between collections

  • Use sealed, labelled drums or IBCs, ideally on a bund or spill pallet
  • Keep gearbox and hydraulic oils separate where you can
  • Don’t mix used oil with coolant, water, solvents or grease
  • Keep containers somewhere a tanker or vehicle can reach safely

Your duty of care

Used turbine oil is hazardous waste. The business producing it must make sure it goes to someone authorised to take it, and keep the paperwork, normally a hazardous waste consignment note. See waste oil disposal and compliance & licence. For what happens next, see waste oil recycling.

What to expect when you book

Every wind job starts with a short conversation. We ask about the site or port, the oils involved, the containers (drums, IBCs or bulk), rough volumes and the dates of your maintenance campaign. Where the job needs it, we bring in our specialist partner, who works in the wind sector, and agree with you who does what. BL Oils provides the licensed collection and the paperwork.

Information that helps us plan

  • Site location or port, and where the used oil will be stored
  • Oil types (gearbox, hydraulic, other lubricants) and whether they’re kept separate
  • Rough volumes and container types
  • Access for a tanker or vehicle, site rules, inductions and permits
  • Your maintenance dates, so collections can follow the oil changes

Leaks and spills

If a container leaks or oil escapes at a compound or base, contain it with spill kits or absorbents and keep it away from drains and watercourses. Our phone is answered 24/7; see emergency waste oil collection.

Keeping the paperwork right

Each collection comes with a hazardous waste consignment note recording the waste type, quantity and code. Keep it with your site records so you can show where the oil went, which also helps with environmental reporting. See consignment notes explained.
