Heating oil doesn’t last for ever. Water gets into tanks through condensation and damaged lids, sludge builds up at the bottom, and oil that has sat unused for a long time can go stale. Tanks also need emptying before they’re replaced or taken out of use, and sometimes the wrong fuel goes into the wrong tank. Once that oil can’t be used, it’s waste and needs collecting by a licensed carrier.

What we collect
- Kerosene (28-second heating oil) contaminated with water or sludge
- Gas oil and heating oil that’s old, stale or no longer needed
- Tank bottoms and oily water drained from the base of a tank
- Misfuels, such as diesel or waste oil put into a kerosene tank
- Oil from tanks being replaced or taken out of use
We collect from farms, commercial and industrial premises, schools, churches and village halls, and landlords and agents managing properties. We also empty domestic tanks.
We don’t collect cooking oil. For used cooking oil from kitchens and takeaways, please use a specialist cooking oil collector.

Tank pump-outs
Our tanker pumps the oil out through the tank’s fill point or a hatch, so you don’t need to drain it into drums yourself. Let us know how far the tank is from where a tanker can park, and about any gates, narrow lanes or soft ground, so we can plan the visit.
What we don’t do
We collect the oil. We don’t repair or install tanks or boilers, or treat fuel so it can be reused. If your tank or boiler needs work, speak to an OFTEC-registered heating engineer, who can also tell you whether the oil is still usable.
Signs your heating oil may be contaminated
- The boiler keeps cutting out or the filter keeps blocking
- Water or a dark layer of sludge at the bottom of the tank
- The oil looks cloudy or dark, or smells unusual
- The wrong fuel was delivered or put into the tank
