What our registration means
Anyone who transports other people’s waste as part of their business must be registered with the Environment Agency. Upper-tier registration covers carrying waste, including hazardous waste such as waste oil, and arranging for it to be handled by other authorised businesses (acting as a dealer).
Your duty of care
As the business producing the waste, you have a legal duty of care for it until it’s passed to someone authorised to take it (see is waste oil hazardous waste?). In practice that means:
- checking that whoever collects your waste oil is a registered waste carrier
- describing the waste accurately, so it can be handled properly
- keeping the waste safe and contained until it’s collected
- keeping the paperwork for every collection
Paperwork with every collection
We provide the correct waste paperwork every time we collect. Because waste oil and used oil filters are hazardous waste, this is normally a hazardous waste consignment note. Keep your copies (for hazardous waste that’s at least three years), as they’re your evidence that the waste was handled legally.
