Getting rid of waste oil the right way
If your business uses oil, sooner or later you’ll have waste oil to get rid of. It isn’t something you can put out with the general rubbish: used oil is hazardous waste, and the law expects you to hand it to someone who is authorised to take it.
BL Oils is a Doncaster-based waste oil collector, registered with the Environment Agency as an upper-tier waste carrier and dealer (CBDU69834). We collect waste oil from businesses across all of Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, give you the correct paperwork, and take the oil to a permitted facility. If you’ve been searching for “waste oil disposal near me” or “oil disposal near me” and you’re in our area, we can help.
What counts as waste oil?
Waste oil is any mineral or synthetic oil that’s been used and can no longer do its job, or that’s become contaminated. For most businesses that means:
- Engine and motor oil from cars, vans, HGVs, plant and farm machinery
- Gearbox, transmission and axle oils
- Hydraulic oil from machinery, lifts and presses
- Industrial, machine, lubricating and compressor oils
- Heating and fuel oil residues
- Bilge oil and slops from vessels (marine waste oil)
- Oily water and silt from interceptors (interceptor waste)
Used oil filters still hold oil, so they’re hazardous too. We take them with your oil (oil filter disposal).
We don’t collect cooking oil. For used cooking oil from kitchens and takeaways, please use a specialist cooking oil collector.

The law on oil waste disposal
It’s hazardous waste. Waste oil is classed as hazardous waste. That means it has to be stored safely, kept separate from other waste, and moved only by a registered waste carrier.
You have a duty of care. As the business that produced the oil, you’re responsible for it until it’s handed to someone authorised to take it. You should check that your collector is registered. You can look up our registration, CBDU69834, on the Environment Agency’s public register (see compliance & licence). Our guide is waste oil hazardous waste? explains the duty of care step by step.
Consignment notes. In England, moving hazardous waste normally needs a hazardous waste consignment note. It records what the waste is, how much there is, where it came from and where it’s going. We provide the paperwork with every collection; keep your copy with your records. See waste oil consignment notes explained.
What not to do. Never pour waste oil down a drain or onto the ground, mix it into general waste, burn it without the right permit (can you burn waste oil?), or give it to an unregistered collector. All of these can lead to enforcement action and damage the environment.
What happens to your oil after collection
We take collected oil to a permitted waste facility. Across the industry, waste oil is usually treated and recovered, either processed into a fuel oil for industrial use or re-refined back into base oil. Either way it’s put to use instead of polluting land or water. Read more about waste oil recycling.
Specialist oils: for transformer oil and wind turbine oil, we work alongside a specialist partner in the sector.
Storing oil until it’s collected
- Use sealed, suitable containers or a bunded tank
- Keep it away from drains, watercourses and heat
- Don’t mix oil with water, antifreeze, solvents or other liquids
- Make sure containers are easy to reach on collection day
Choosing a waste oil disposal company
Whoever takes your oil, a few simple checks protect your business:
- Check the registration. Ask for their waste carrier registration number and look it up on the Environment Agency public register.
- Get the paperwork. A proper collector will always give you the correct waste paperwork. If someone offers to take hazardous waste with no paperwork, say no.
- Ask where it goes. Your oil should go to a permitted facility to be treated and recovered.
- Keep your records. File your consignment notes so you can show what happened to your waste if you’re ever asked.
For every type of business
We handle collection and disposal for garages and workshops, factories and commercial sites, plant hire and construction firms, farms, fleet depots and ports and vessels. Whether you’ve got a few drums or a bulk tank, the process is the same: tell us what you have and we’ll give you a free quote.
Frequently asked questions
Is waste oil hazardous waste?
Yes. Used mineral and synthetic oils are classed as hazardous waste, so they need to be stored safely, kept separate and moved by a registered waste carrier with the right paperwork.
Can I take my business’s waste oil to the tip?
Household recycling centres are for household waste, so they usually won’t accept oil from businesses. Businesses should use a registered waste carrier like BL Oils.
What paperwork will I get?
Every collection comes with the correct waste paperwork. For waste oil in England this is normally a hazardous waste consignment note. Keep it with your records.
