Port of Hull waste oil collection

Sludge, bilge water, slops and used oil collected from vessels in the Hull docks, and from ship repair and port sites around them. Approved contractor at the Port of Hull.

Marine waste oil collection in Hull

The Port of Hull stretches along the north bank of the Humber, with a string of enclosed docks, river berths and jetties. Cargo ships, ferries, offshore wind vessels and workboats all use it, and all of them land oily waste. BL Oils is an approved contractor at the Port of Hull, and we collect sludge, bilge water, slops and used oil from vessels across the port.

We’re a Doncaster-based, Environment Agency upper-tier waste carrier and dealer (CBDU69834). From our base we reach Hull along the M18, M62 and A63.

What we collect at Hull

  • Sludge from fuel and lube oil cleaning (sludge and slops)
  • Bilge water and bilge oil (bilge and oily water)
  • Oily water and slops
  • Waste engine, gear and lube oil from maintenance
  • Used oil filters from engine rooms and workshops

Oily waste only. We don’t collect sewage, rubbish (garbage) or chemicals from ships, and we don’t collect cooking oil or galley waste. Your ship’s agent or the port can arrange those separately.

Docks, river berths and dry docks

Most of Hull’s commercial docks sit east of the city centre. King George Dock and Queen Elizabeth Dock share one lock, with Alexandra Dock next door, and Albert and William Wright Docks lie to the west, closer to the city. There are also river berths and jetties out on the Humber, including the jetties at Saltend. Hull also has dry docks, where vessels come in for repairs and refits.

That mix means very different jobs. A ferry or cargo ship alongside for a short call needs its sludge and bilge water landed while it’s in port. A vessel in dry dock for a refit can produce larger amounts of oily water, drained oil and tank residues over several days. We can plan a one-off collection or several visits during a refit.

Alexandra Dock is a base for offshore wind work, so used oil from turbine maintenance is landed in Hull too. See wind turbine oil disposal.

How a collection at Hull works

Most collections are booked through the ship’s agent. Here’s what normally happens.

  1. Tell us about the call

The ship’s agent, operator or port gives us the vessel name, port and berth, when it’s alongside, and the waste types and rough volumes.

  2. We plan it with you

We give you a free, no-obligation quote and agree the timing, access to the quay and any port security requirements.

  3. Pumped to our tanker on the quay

We pump the waste from the vessel straight into our road tanker, parked on the quay alongside.

  4. Paperwork handed over

You get a hazardous waste consignment note for every collection, showing what was collected and how much.

Booking a collection in Hull

When you book, tell us which dock and quay the vessel is on, as access and gate arrangements differ across the port. Let us know when the vessel is alongside and how long it’s staying, and the waste types and rough volumes. For refits, tell us roughly how long the vessel will be in dry dock.

Ship to tanker on the quay

We collect by pumping the waste from the vessel straight into our road tanker, parked on the quay alongside. The vessel needs to be on a berth the tanker can drive up to, so tell us the berth early and we’ll check access with the agent.

See quayside tanker collection for what to arrange before we arrive.

Around Hull

As well as the docks, we collect from ship repairers, marine engineers, workshops and businesses across the port estate and the east of the city, including Marfleet, Hedon and Saltend, and west along the estuary to Hessle. For waste oil collection from businesses elsewhere in the city, see waste oil collection in Hull. Dockside interceptors can be emptied too (interceptor waste).

Paperwork

Every collection comes with a hazardous waste consignment note showing the waste type, quantity and waste code. The ship can use these details for its Oil Record Book. Our registration, CBDU69834, can be checked on the Environment Agency’s public register. See compliance & licence.
