Killingholme waste oil collection

Sludge, bilge water, slops and used oil collected from ro-ro vessels at the Killingholme river terminals, and from the riverside industry around them.

Marine waste oil collection at Killingholme

Killingholme sits on the south bank of the Humber, just upriver from Immingham. Its terminals are built out on the river rather than inside an enclosed dock, and they’re mainly used by roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) ships carrying trailers, containers and new cars to and from the Continent. BL Oils is an approved contractor at Killingholme, and we collect sludge, bilge water, slops and used oil from the vessels that call there.

We’re a Doncaster-based, Environment Agency upper-tier waste carrier and dealer (CBDU69834). We reach Killingholme along the M180, A180 and A160.

What we collect at Killingholme

  • Sludge from fuel and lube oil cleaning (sludge and slops)
  • Bilge water and bilge oil (bilge and oily water)
  • Oily water and slops
  • Waste engine, gear and lube oil from maintenance
  • Used oil filters from engine rooms and workshops

Oily waste only. We don’t collect sewage, rubbish (garbage) or chemicals from ships, and we don’t collect cooking oil or galley waste. Your ship’s agent or the port can arrange those separately.

Ro-ro ships on a timetable

Ro-ro ships run to a schedule. They come in, unload, load and sail again, often after a short time alongside. Collections have to fit around that, so we plan them with the agent before the vessel arrives and aim to pump while it’s working cargo.

Because the berths are on the river, there’s no lock to pass through, but tides and weather on the Humber still affect when vessels arrive and leave. If the sailing time changes, let us know and we’ll work around it.

How a collection at Killingholme works

Most collections are booked through the ship’s agent. Here’s what normally happens.

  1. Tell us about the call

The ship’s agent, operator or port gives us the vessel name, port and berth, when it’s alongside, and the waste types and rough volumes.

  2. We plan it with you

We give you a free, no-obligation quote and agree the timing, access to the quay and any port security requirements.

  3. Pumped to our tanker on the quay

We pump the waste from the vessel straight into our road tanker, parked on the quay alongside.

  4. Paperwork handed over

You get a hazardous waste consignment note for every collection, showing what was collected and how much.

Booking a collection at Killingholme

Tell us the terminal and berth, the vessel’s arrival and sailing times, and the waste types and rough volumes. For vessels that call regularly, we can agree a pattern of collections in advance so the sludge and bilge tanks don’t get too full between calls. Give us the agent’s details and any terminal access requirements.

Ship to tanker on the quay

We collect by pumping the waste from the vessel straight into our road tanker, parked on the quay alongside. The vessel needs to be on a berth the tanker can drive up to, so tell us the berth early and we’ll check access with the agent.

See quayside tanker collection for what to arrange before we arrive.

Paperwork

Every collection comes with a hazardous waste consignment note showing the waste type, quantity and waste code. The ship can use these details for its Oil Record Book. Our registration, CBDU69834, can be checked on the Environment Agency’s public register. See compliance & licence.
